What Should I Prepare Before Adding Products?

Adding products goes faster — and looks more professional — when your content is prepared in advance rather than written on the fly. This article covers what to have ready before you open Commerce > Products in your dashboard.

Core product content, per product

  • Product name/title
  • A clear, benefit-focused description
  • Price (and compare-at price, if you’re showing a discount)
  • Product status
  • Stock quantity

Product photography

  • At least 3–5 photos per product, from different angles
  • Consistent lighting and background across your whole catalog — this matters more for a polished look than any single great photo
  • Square or consistent aspect ratio images, sized at least 1000x1000px

Plan your catalog structure before you start

Your dashboard organizes products under Commerce > Products, with separate areas for Categories, Attribute Sets, Attributes, Colors, and Metafields. Rather than adding products first and organizing later, it’s faster to plan this structure up front: decide your main categories (e.g., “Shirts,” “Accessories”), and any shared attributes your products will use (e.g., Size, Material) so you’re not recreating the same options for every product.

A tip on variants

💡 Tip: If products come in multiple sizes or colors, set up your Attributes and Colors once, then reuse them across every product with variants. Building this structure before your first product saves you from redoing it repeatedly as your catalog grows.
